The Bullmastiff

The Bullmastiff is a large working breed that originated in England in the mid-1800s. Bred by gamekeepers as estate guardians, they were developed to track, pin, and hold poachers without mauling them.
To achieve this, breeders crossed the Old English Bulldog of the 19th century — a strong and fearless type — with the Mastiff, known for its power and steadiness.
The result was the Gamekeeper’s Night Dog: powerful, reliable, and deeply loyal.

Temperament
Despite their size, Bullmastiffs are known for their gentle and affectionate nature. They are devoted, calm, and intelligent companions who form strong bonds with their families.
They are natural protectors — alert and fearless when needed — yet typically quiet and reserved indoors.
They’re wonderful with children when raised in a loving, structured environment, though supervision is always recommended due to their size and strength.
Bullmastiffs are loyal to their core — they live to please their people.

Training & Socialization
Bullmastiffs respond best to positive, consistent training and firm but kind leadership. They are eager to please but can be independent thinkers, so early socialization and obedience work are key.
Expose them to new sights, people, and situations early in life to encourage confidence and good manners.
They are not a “high-drive” breed — short, focused sessions work better than repetitive drills.
